Essential functions of this position:

Develops, coordinates and executes various facilities management, engineering and planning of projects and assists with design review for new capital projects (large and small) on campus

Ensures equipment is operated in most efficient manner to minimize operating costs associated with energy consumption, and equipment repair

Oversees maintenance, repair and improvements to existing facilities; engineering and technical support, HVAC controls troubleshooting and review, emergency management and planning, remediation; and other related tasks as assigned by the Director

“Mandatory personnel” as necessary for UNCW

Liaison with UNCW Facilities Planning and Design staff for new construction and planning as needed

Determines the feasibility of project implementation or continuation, devise engineering with counterparts at other universities and colleges to compare operational matters and exchange data

N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:

Must be familiar with methods of construction of large research buildings and related structures and equipment, NC state special inspections requirements, engineering requirements pertaining to mechanical (HVAC), electrical and plumbing systems of the type and size of large commercial installations

Knowledge of the building trades and equipment with a focus on complex university facilities including HVAC and utility distribution systems

Ability to keep up with best practices, codes, laws, etc. that affect the areas within maintenance and plan to implement them effectively

Ability to troubleshoot unique issues within the scope of the relevant trades and recommend best practice solutions

Operate a personal computer and demonstrate the ability to learn and work within technologies related to the trades

Knowledge of facilities maintenance management principles and practices, utilities maintenance and operations, and construction and design management

Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically

Ability to interact professionally with a variety of professionals in different areas including architects, engineers and contractors

Ability to direct and supervise the work of technical staff working in the trades knowledge and understanding of other special equipment needed for reliable facility operation (uninterpretable power supplies, emergency generators and their related switchgear, lab delivery services, etc.)

Knowledge and understanding of research equipment and particular requirements for their safe and reliable operation

Ability to work in a changing environment which may require reprioritization of daily operations

Ability to prioritize work based on importance to the university mission, equipment reliability

Preferred education, professional skills and experience:

Supervisory experience

Experience with design and construction practices applicable to state construction projects

Engineering experience either mechanical or electrical disciplines is desired

Basic engineering principles related to heat transfer, operation of mechanical equipment, electricity, refrigeration, and fluid flow – familiarity with general construction and maintenance practices for institutional buildings and infrastructure

Engineering drawings, HVAC systems and controls, plumbing and pumping systems, sanitary sewer systems, fire protection systems, operation of regional energy plants, keying systems

Troubleshoot problems associated with the operation of mechanical and energy systems

Project management experience

Familiarity with building codes
