Summary of Position

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with a research focus in biotechnology with potential applications in Marine Science. Candidates whose research focuses on biomaterials, nanobiodevices, biopolymers, bioactive natural products and macromolecules are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will 1) be committed to teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; 2) establish and maintain an independent research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students; and 3) have the potential to collaborate in research with faculty in both the Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://uncw.edu/chem) and the Biology and Marine Biology Departments (https://www.uncw.edu/bio/) and across the coastal and marine sciences (https://uncw.edu/cms/) at UNCW.

Minimum Requirements

A Ph.D. degree and postdoctoral experience, or significant industrial experience, is required.

Chemistry & Biochemistry at UNCW offers exciting, student oriented programs that award Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS,ACS Certified) and Master of Science (MS) degrees. A significant portion of the training takes place in our laboratories, both those associated with courses, and those involving research in Marine and Atmospheric Science, Biochemistry, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Computational and Physical Chemistry, Chemical Education, and most recently, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, all of which incorporate our state of the art instrumentation (http://www.uncw.edu/chem/ ). In addition to rigorous courses in all aspects of chemistry, most of our undergraduate students and all of our local graduate students carry out research under the direct supervision of our outstanding faculty.

College/School Information

UNC Wilmington, “the state’s coastal university,” has a long history of supporting coastal and marine sciences across a variety of disciplines. Spread across 11 departments and centers, expertise includes areas of life sciences, physical sciences, and interdisciplinary approaches as well as policy, education, and coastal health. Excellent support for research is provided in the various departments as well as at the CREST Research Park, including the Center for Marine Science, Shellfish Research Hatchery, Marine Biotechnology Center, and finfish aquaculture facility. The Center for Marine Science provides a small boat fleet as well as vessels capable of offshore research, running seawater facilities, dive support, modern instrumentation core facilities, and offshore sampling support www.uncw.edu/cms. The CREST campus is located adjacent to the Masonboro Island component of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve and provides excellent access to local habitats. The University of North Carolina Wilmington is committed to excellence in teaching and provides training in marine sciences through targeted undergraduate degrees and degree options, Master’s degrees, a PhD in Marine Biology, and a forthcoming inter-institutional PhD in Integrative Coastal and Marine Sciences.
